desktop is running windows vista
laptop is running windows 7
as far as specs they are pretty identical
for recording software I am using pro tools m powered and a m audio fire wire interface

I'd go for the desktop computer, and probably some sort of NAS for backup. Backup's crucial when one is working with applications where data – and fairly large amounts of it – is in play.

desktop – but uprade it to 7 and make sure you have LOTS of redundant storage.

If it's a permanent studio, get a desktop. They are cheaper spec to dollar and are much more expandable. If it's a temporary studio or if you plan on working on tracks at home after you record them, get a laptop to make your life easier.
