on my laptop i have 84 processes running right now and the cpu is at 5%. maybe you don't have a lot of RAM (random access memory). i suggest having at least 2gb or more for a laptop. my laptop has 4gb but i got it on black friday so i got it for cheap. itll cost more regularly. i suggest downloading ccleaner and running that. very useful tool.

you have 2 options.

option 1 –
run a system restore & wipe your harddrive after taking all your special programsphotosvideos off it to clean the comp completely

option 2 –
step 1 – go into the start menu, search msconfig in the search bar (if you have windows vista+) if not, open hard drive C: and search msconfig in the search bar
step 2 – open the services tab and search for any un necessary programs/files and uncheck them (leave everything windows/microsoft checked)
step 3 – do the same thing in the start up tab.
step 4 – restart computer

My system runs Vista as well. It could be that you just have a ton of programs that start up with your computer and are running idle. Go to to your Start menu and then select all programs. Find a folder that says "Startup" click it and see if anything is in it. If so, just right click the programs and delete them all. Then reboot your computer. It should boot and run faster as those programs are no longer automatically starting up. THEY ARE NOT DELETED JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE REMOVED FROM THE START FOLDER!!! I want that clear. =] Also, run a program called PC Decrapifier and once gone through the initial start up remove all the programs in the first section. There will be two sections. The first is what I call bloated software crap list. These programs are added by microsoft because companies pay them to.Delete them. THEN there will be a second section that allows you to clean programs. Select any you don't use and remove. This too should help a lot.

Last but not least you can use MSconfig to help in removing other start up applications.
1. Click your start menu
2. Type in the search bar " Run"
3. Select the Program from the list that pops up.
4. when open type msconfig
5. When msconfig pops up go to the Services section
6. You can un-check the following
– computer browser, offline files, Fax(if you don't use your fax) , KtmRm for distributed transactions,Remoter access auto connection, Remote access manager,Smart card(Provided you don't connect camers to the comp), smart card removal polacy(provided again no camera conecting), secondary logon, and Tablet PC Imput Service,
THEN 7. select the Start Up tab and look through the list. Look at the names of the folders and see online if they're ok disable.

If ALL of this doesn't help then it may be a virus, worm, Trojan, etc.

Maybe I’m missing the point here… but I play my protools sessions out of my iMac built-in computer speakers by going to :

    PROTOOLS
“SETUP” (at the top) > “playback engine” > click the arrow next to “current engine” (at the top of the window) > select “built-in output” (instead of your interface)
    – a window will open saying protools will restart, click “OK” –

    Then go to
    COMPUTER (MAC)
“system preferences” > “sound” > “output”, and in the window choose “internal speakers” (instead of you interface)

When PT re-opens it will play out of whichever speakers you choose. You just have to re-route the sound from protools, so it goes out your computer speakers instead of your interface.

    Hope this helps.
